Cage Compounds and Redox Synthesis

Intermetallic clathrates were discovered in the 1950s when the basic relations of alkali metals and group 14 elements were investigated [1, 2]. After the structural elucidation of Na8Si46 and NaxSi136 [3] the research field spread continuously, and representatives comprising Na, K, Rb and Cs were obtained. The only exception was the Li-containing clathrate and it was concluded that Li atoms are...

Networking a hollow cage via guest coordination.

A hollow coordination cage with a highly symmetric cavity was successfully self-assembled to form a 2D-network having a less symmetric cavity via networking of disordered guests with a metal connector.

Selective Co‐Encapsulation Inside an M6L4 Cage

There is broad interest in molecular encapsulation as such systems can be utilized to stabilize guests, facilitate reactions inside a cavity, or give rise to energy-transfer processes in a confined space. Detailed understanding of encapsulation events is required to facilitate functional molecular encapsulation. In this contribution, it is demonstrated that Ir and Rh-Cp-type metal complexes can...

Subcomponent Exchange Transforms an FeII4L4 Cage from High- to Low-Spin, Switching Guest Release in a Two-Cage System

Subcomponent exchange transformed new high-spin FeII4L4 cage 1 into previously-reported low-spin FeII4L4 cage 2: 2-formyl-6-methylpyridine was ejected in favor of the less sterically hindered 2-formylpyridine, with concomitant high- to low-spin transition of the cage's FeII centers. High-spin 1 also reacted more readily with electron-rich anilines than 2, enabling the design of a system consist...
